Dick Devos and His Aviation and Other Accomplishments
Dick DeVos, a long-time pilot, is licensed to fly single engine planes, helicopters, and jets. He is also the son of Amway co-founder Richard DeVos, was the former president of Amway, and is currently the CEO of his own Windquest Group, a holding company for a number of businesses. Dick was appointed as one of seven new members of the Management Advisory Council’s 13 members. The civilian panel oversees the Federal Aviation Administration and advises the senior management on spending, policy, long-range planning, regulatory matters, and charts the agency’s strategic course.
Contributions to Aviation Projects
Dick is a great contributor to many varied projects along with his wife Betsy and their Family Foundation, and they have been extremely dedicated to making their community better. Betsy DeVos is also the U.S. Education Secretary.
Dick and Betsy co-founded the West Michigan Aviation Academy, a unique public high school and nonprofit charter school that was started in 2010 to prepare students for careers in the aviation industry. It has grown from 80 students originally housed in rundown office space at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport to having its own building. Each spring, a public lottery is held if the applications exceed the available 600 openings for students from seven counties. The school is tuition-free and operates with a per-student state allowance of approximately $7,500. However, the DeVos Family Foundation gave the school over $7 million through 2014.
Dick DeVos has played a major role in turning around the Gerald R. Ford International Airport as the head of a group of business leaders who convinced Southwest to offer routes out of the airport, spurred passenger growth and lowered air fares.
Some of Their Additional Contributions
The couple made a donation of $12.5 million toward the construction in 2006 of a $103 million Spectrum Health System children’s hospital which was named for Dick’s mother, Helen DeVos. This hospital allows families to remain at home and not require parents to take time off work to drive to the Mayo Clinic or Ann Arbor or Chicago for the children to receive care. Dick DeVos chairs Spectrum’s corporate board.
Between 1989 and 2015, the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation gave away $138.7 million to health services, arts and culture, leadership programs, churches, education reform and private school scholarships. As mega-donors of the GOP, their political influence has brought about major changes in state laws affecting labor and education.

Corporations never seem to be telling the truth. It’s hard to trust any massive company in America because words generally don’t line up with actions. But I am encouraged by the recent public letter by CEO Steve Ritchie.
Steve Ritchie has taken over as the head of Papa Johns Pizza. He has quite a story. He started off delivering pies before moving into the executive world. He’s been with the company for nearly his entire life and now he’s the leader. There’s nobody that understands the company culture better than Steve Ritchie.
That’s why it was so disheartening to hear that the former CEO and founder of the company used a racial slur during a conference call. It immediately sent the world into a tizzy. The former CEO was fired immediately and the company quickly moved away from his image.
But that didn’t stop the NFL and the Major Leagues from moving away from Papa Johns, as well. The comment immediately did damage to the company, and now Steve Ritchie is here to move the pizza conglomerate in a new direction.
Steve Ritchie issued an open letter to customers on the company’s website. It includes a point-blank apology. It’s incredibly rare to see a corporation take responsibility for the actions of its employees. That’s why it was so refreshing to see Steve Ritchie become a little bit vulnerable as he took control of the pizza company.
Words are cheap. Steve Ritchie (@stevemritchie) knows that. That’s why he laid out a concise and transparent plan in his open letter. It was mentioned in an article from cnbc.com that the plan is meant to address any racial insensitivity in the company. It announces the hiring of outside help to educate the pizza company’s 120,000 employees.
But the most important part of the letter is often overlooked. It announces that the company will start listening to employees, franchisees and customers. This is the exact opposite of tone deaf and should delight social justice warriors. The company is willing to listen to the hardships of its employees and customers. This should inform Steve Ritchie on the company’s next move as he takes a new direction.

Young entrepreneurs these days, especially entrepreneurs, have a lot of tough challenges to navigate. But the recession in 2008 and today’s changing world hasn’t slowed them down. In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported in 2011 that those born after 1980 but before the year 2000 are responsible for starting 160,000 enterprises each month.
Adding to that, over a quarter of millennials are their own boss. Entrepreneurship doesn’t seem to be a stranger to them. But where should these young savvy entrepreneurs locate themselves to have the best chance for success? Sawyer Howitt, an up-and-comer and Portland native who is rising fast, has a unique insight on this phenomenon. Not only did he already graduate from Lincoln High School, but he also knows what a business needs in terms of operating it and securing finances. Perhaps that’s why he is part of the esteemed Meriwether Group as a project manager. Thus, here are the top places for a business-minded millennial, according to him: San Francisco, Austin, Salt Lake City, Palo Alto, Denver, Yorba Linda, Minneapolis, and Santa Monica.
Sawyer Howitt is a top mind on how businesses can brand themselves to consumers. He has a vision for marketing and his skills allow him to uncover economic opportunities that aid clients and consumers alike. But Howitt’s prowess doesn’t stop there. He’s also a good guy in general. Aside from financial focuses, he helps the community by giving donations to charities, mentoring young people, and standing up for the rights of women. He is also part of the leadership team for a group that studies ethnicity.
His interests include other things as well, such as fishing, watching the Trailblazers shoot hoops, and playing racquetball. He is planning on going to UC Berkley. His feeling is that now is the best time to launch a startup, now matter who are. This is due to a number of factors, he says. Namely, investors are hungry right now and investing in more projects. Strike while the iron is hot.
